Bumblebees DO Sting
Bumblebees DO Sting
When I was a wee little lad, catching and keeping creepy crawlers was a favorite past time of mine. Spiders, grasshoppers, beetles, praying mantids, earwigs...you name it, i've kept it. I loved staying over at my cousin's house during the summer because they had a huge backyard, and huge backyards meant lots and lots of bugs. One day, during one of my insects excursions, my uncle said to me...
"Do you see those big bees over there by the melon flowers?"
"Yea, what about them?"
"Those are called bumblebees, and they don't sting."I thought to myself, "Hmmm...if they don't sting, technically, I can just catch them with my bare hands." What a brilliant idea! So I marched over to the melon flowers in excitement of catching a big, furry bee with my bare hands. I grabbed the first bumblebee I saw by the wings and guess what...it stung me.
Boy did that wipe the giant smile off my face quickly. I was at shock at first. My mind couldn't comprehend what just happened. As the pain sank in, I let out a deathly scream that shattered the windows. My cousins ran over to see what the commotion was. I told them what happened and they carried me inside. The pain was excruciating. I started turning pale and my cousins were THIS close to calling the ambulance. But as quickly as the pain came, it went away and the blood rushed back to my face.
To this day, I still don't know if my uncle was just misinformed or if I got punk'd by my uncle.

We were all gullable at one point.
I was always a believer...no one ever tricked me. Or the person that told me wasn't misinformed.
!
Why those little...fiends.
Bumblebees sting? WHAAAAA? Damn...that sucks
you got thin skin, son
you got punkd!
no touching.
poned.
I laughed so hard. Only because I've been fed the same lie.
Ahhh I remember the first time those buggers stung me. It was a crisp summer day. My innocent young self discovered a bumble bee hive (if its called a hive) under a rock. Thinking to impress my friends (because they thought these were bees, and I thought bumble bees didn't sting) I began kicking the rock, and with every kick brought forth a buzzing group of furry bee cousins.
All was good until one landed on my hand. I tried shaking it off. Nuffin! Of course it was not gonna work, its ass needle was stuck in my flesh!
I calmly excused myself, went home, and began screaming.
You just got punk'd. But seriously, i never cried over bug stings. Not even from wasps. But maybe you were younger than i was when i first got stung. I was 3.
you've just been stung'd!!
Hahahahah. Karma transcends time!
at least it died afterwards, hahaha.
I think some do sting and some don't. When I was a kid, my older cousins told me the ones with a yellow spot on their head (or maybe it was the ones WITHOUT a yellow spot on their head) do NOT sting, and they used to catch them and tie a thread around their fat thoraces, and let them fly around on a leash. Back then, everyone thought that was very cute, of course today most people would find it cruel and offensive. Times change. I do not fear bumblebees, but I do fear wasps. Greatly. Give me a rattlesnake any day, just keep those horrible wasps away from me.
what's an earwig?
thought you meant "The Bumblebeez" as in the australian beat band
yep they sting!
Haha! Now you know! =D
ouch.
I was probably bees' worst nightmare. or more like a science experiment gone wrong and I ended up dismantling them into pieces to see if they would still live.
I guess I got my revenge when I woke up and was rewarded with 7 stings in one night. One on the eye, one on the lips and the rest all over my body.
Ditto Pnoiz1's comment.
I've never been stung and never plan on it!
hahah.. what a mean uncle. haha
uncles owned me also!
Bumblebee stings don't actually hurt as much as a regular bee sting, at least I don't think so. The bumblebee sting I got only hurt for twenty minutes and was fine after that. At least you didn't grab a hornet or something.
You got served!
LOL!!!! ahahahhhaa
Revenge is sweet. Just show your uncle this entry and watch him start to sweat.
you uncle probably laughed when you got stung.
I've been told the same thing, "bumble bees don't sting son", the difference was I wasn't stupid enough to test it. I hate furry flying things.
Ouch.
Oh yes they bloody well do sting!!
There are some stingless bees in some parts of the world, including some huge bumblebee lookin things that don't sting. But most do. And they hurt.
I was a bug-catcher myself as a kid, too, and one time I was horrified to discover that there are some grasshoppers that have serious jaws that can bits HARD. Owch.
I got stung as well when I was younger. Near the dumpster adjacent to the baseball field. My thumb began to swell.
when I went to summer camp, I told people to eat the berries and mushrooms we found :-/
no one ever died that I know of....I never ate them either
I'm not that dumb
this made me.. LAUGH OUT LOUD.
